Based on an authentic narrative by Hendrick Aupaumut, 18th and 19th century Mohican diplomat, this is “the telling of a traditional mother-child talking experience; the transmitting of a threatened yet enduring heritage, and a testimony to its survival —no, the heritage not only survives; in an endeavor such as this, it thrives.” Bea Ganley, author, poet and teacher of writing at Nazareth College, Rochester, NY.
“. . . a lovely little book that teaches a lot.” Beverly Slapin in the OYATE catalog, 2007-2008, p. 296.

This little book was adapted from the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address and other prayers that are traditional among Native People of this land. It is especially moving when read by young children, as it calls us all to acknowledge the wonder and beauty of the whole of Creation, as well as the Creator — the basis of Mohican spirituality.

“Bowman . . . writes with a spare economy of words that shows the essence, life and deeds of a great leader. The crayon and colored pencil illustrations by the [fourth graders] of Bowler School, many of whom are citizens of the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans, bring the circle around.” OYATE catalog, 2007-2008, p. 1.
“This book brings to the surface all the truth in a language that our young people can understand, while gaining a sense of cultural pride and belonging.” Kenneth R. Ninham (Mohican/Oneida), MSE/ICAD III.

This book was the result of a summer program with middle and high school students of the Mohican Nation who interviewed Elders living on the Reservation. One objective of the program, as articulated by a student participant, was that “to know our history is to know ourselves.” Bea Ganley, editor, wrote in her Afterword, “What they have accomplished together in a short time is more than this publication; there has been a bridge constructed across the generations, a bridge built of love and respect.” This book is proof that such bridges can be built in any community desiring to do so, and gives teachers a blueprint to follow with their students.

This is a delightful book about Harry’s experiences in the one-room schoolhouse that still stands in the Township of Red Springs, the eastern half of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Reservation. It will be an eye-opener for children who have no such memories, and offer mixed emotions to teachers, parents and grandparents who might remember similar times in their homes, schools and communities. Editorial comments of the author have been preserved in the text, and many older readers may agree with him about the changes that have occurred over the years and have stories of their own to share.

“Dot’s passion is twofold: she loves teaching and has, indeed, never stopped doing it, especially through her other love — writing. ‘Aunt Dot’ loves kids — of all ages, sizes, colors and backgrounds. She loves to tell stories, recite her own poetry and gamble her own money. But, as her friend Angela [Fina] wrote to her . . . she is ‘never static, always moving forward, always on her own journey toward the stars.’
“As we read the lines of these pages, we may get a glimpse of her inner dreams and the worlds that have encircled them as she moves forward toward the stars. Journey on, Aunt Dot!” From the back cover of INNER DREAMS . . .
