THE MOHICAN PEOPLE, THEIR LIVES AND THEIR LANDS
A CURRICULUM UNIT FOR GRADES FOUR AND FIVE

Curriculum"In spite of James Fenimore Cooper's mistaking them for Mohegans and, in so many words, pronouncing them a "vanishing people," the Mohicans are alive and well and living in Wisconsin. This kit is one small effort to bridge that gap of learning for young people who should know that this Native Nation was once a power to be reckoned with in what we now call the northeastern United States."

Thus the Introduction to the curriculum kit entitled THE MOHICAN PEOPLE, THEIR LIVES AND THEIR LANDS summarizes the importance for young children to study and internalize the lessons learned by one indigenous Nation from their experiences of being a colonized People. The history of the Mohicans of the valley of the mighty Mahicannituck -now known as the Hudson River - is a story of the domination of one Nation, with an already highly developed economy, socio-political system and culture, by others with more powerful technologies and an insatiable lust for land.

For educators wishing to teach young people about colonialism and its effects on the People it used and misused, this story is a classic example of that history - its strategies, "successes" and, above all, its frequent, and often even cruel, errors. The lessons the Mohican story offers to young children, who need to see authentic Native People, not the stereotypical images of them, are equally valid for 21st century scholars of any age.
